Arm & Hammer baking soda

Need to bake some scones? Or perhaps get rid of that god-awful stench in your fridge? Is Arm & Hammer Pure Baking Soda the safe choice?

This article takes you through Arm & Hammer Baking Soda 101, so you’re fully prepped with all the do’s and don’ts.

Arm & Hammer baking soda ingredients

Arm & Hammer Pure Baking Soda is made of pure sodium bicarbonate. It is available in boxes, resealable packets, and also shaker bottles. The sodium bicarbonate is the sole ingredient because this is baking soda and not baking powder.

The baking powder would add acidic additives to the sodium bicarbonate. Baking soda is a salt of sodium and bicarbonate. It can be in the form of either a white powder or larger granules. The compound when dissolved in water or in the body, makes it alkaline.

Is Arm & Hammer baking soda edible? Is it food grade?

Absolutely! It is certified as food-grade and safe for human consumption. It is multi-purpose as it can be used for cooking, deodorizing, and cleaning. Not to mention, if used right, it can help you whip up some moist and light pastries and other sweet treats.

The Arm & Hammer Pure Baking Soda is 100% edible and certified food-grade. Its primary purpose is for use in cooking and baking. It is completely safe for ingestion, be it for making meals or as an antacid to soothe acidity.

The food-grade certification means that it is 100% non-toxic both during the production process and in terms of consumption. It is safe to directly ingest as an additive.

The Pure Baking Soda does not release any noxious chemicals when exposed to high temperatures, such as in ovens, pans, or other cooking utensils.

Can Arm & Hammer baking soda be used for cooking and baking?

Arm & Hammer Pure Baking Soda is perfect for cooking and baking. In baking, it acts as a leavening agent that helps the dough to rise. This is crucial for all those bread, cakes, and other baked goods!

It also helps with softening legumes for easier cooking. It can be used in marinades to make the meat tender. It also makes batter or crusts crispier, such as potato crisps, fried prawn nuggets, and even pies!

Is Arm & Hammer baking soda synthetic?

Arm & Hammer Pure Baking Soda is synthetic in the sense that it is mined and processed differently. In technical terms, pure baking soda is one that is directly mined in its natural form, namely the ore nahcolite.

Arm & Hammer baking soda is also the very same in terms of substance. But it is mined from trone ores using chemical processes.

The mined substance is subject to heat, making soda ash.  Bubbles of carbon dioxide are passed through the soda ash, run through a centrifuge, and dried to make the final sodium bicarbonate product.

Does Arm & Hammer baking soda contain aluminum?

Arm & Hammer Pure Baking Soda only contains sodium bicarbonate. It does not add any aluminum in its formulation as an ingredient. There is no intentional use of aluminum in the manufacturing process either.

The confusion stems from the aluminum-free labeling of other baking sodas. Only baking powders may have aluminum compounds, but not this pure baking soda. Now, trace cross-contamination of aluminum during the extraction or processing cannot be ruled out.

But, if present at all, it is certainly much lower than legal or commercial limits.

Does Arm & Hammer baking soda contain gluten?

Arm & Hammer Pure Baking Soda is 100% gluten-free. It does not contain any gluten-based ingredients such as grains or starches. It is safe for people with gluten intolerance or celiac disease to use.

There is no risk of any cross-contamination from other products like cleaning soda. The facilities used are free of gluten-based ingredients. So you can be sure that you won’t have an immune response or any allergic reaction to its use.

Does Arm & Hammer baking soda contain corn?

The Arm & Hammer Pure Baking Soda does not contain any corn or corn starch. It is pure sodium bicarbonate. It is usually in baking powders that there is some addition of corn or other starch.

Corn or potato starch, or alternatively flour is added only to baking powder. This is to keep the acidic additives from reacting with sodium bicarbonate. It is a stabilizer that helps to extend the powder’s shelf-life.

Does Arm & Hammer baking soda contain sodium?

Since Arm & Hammer Pure Baking Soda is 100% sodium bicarbonate, sodium is obviously a big part of the formula. Each serving of pure baking soda, which is 1/8th of a teaspoon, contains 50 mg of sodium.

This means that half a teaspoon contains about 600 mg of sodium. That’s quite a bit, so take it in moderation or as per cooking instructions. This adds up to about .42 grams of sodium. In one box there are about 3215 servings.

Is Arm & Hammer baking soda good for whitening teeth?

Does it clean?

The Arm & Hammer Pure Baking Soda can suffice for cleaning your carpet.

How to use it?

Can I use Arm & Hammer baking soda to make slime?

Arm & Hammer Pure Baking Soda can be a quick and easy hack to make slime. Not only is it cheap and homemade, but it is also cool enough to keep your kids occupied for hours!

How to make slime

There is a standard method to make Arm & Hammer baking soda slime. Mix about 5 ounces of glue (either normal or glow in the dark), with about half to one tablespoon of Arm & Hammer baking soda.

The amount you use depends on the consistency you prefer. Then add some contact lens solution, drop by drop, gradually. Adding it at once will cause the mixture to congeal.

For finishing touches, you can add a few drops of food coloring to make the slime more vibrant!

You could also create a paste of warm water and baking soda. Then add the paste into a prepared solution of glue and coloring. This creates little spheres of slime in the solution.

Does Arm & Hammer baking soda deodorize?

The Arm & Hammer Pure Baking Soda is useful for deodorizing smells. These can be around the house, from the carpet, the kitchen, and even closets. The baking soda absorbs foul smells and malodors by neutralizing acids.

You can also use Arm & Hammer baking soda products designed for deodorizing specific areas. These include the Fabric and Carpet Deodoriser, the Fridge and Freezer Deodoriser, Trash Can, and Dumpster Deodoriser, amongst others.

There are also scented deodorizers available, along with air freshener ranges.

Does Arm & Hammer baking soda expire? How long does it last?

The Arm & Hammer Pure Baking Soda has a shelf life of 3 years from the date of manufacture. You should check the batch date to ensure it is fresh on purchase. Once you begin to use it, it should be replaced every 30 days.

By the end of a month, the baking soda reaches its saturation and cannot stave off foul smells anymore. Its maximum utility is ensured by rotating new packets every 30 days.

The deodorizers will also begin to lose their effectiveness within a few weeks. If the packaging is damaged or opened, it will have much less impact.

How to store Arm & Hammer baking soda?

Store the Arm & Hammer Pure Baking Soda and other baking soda products differently for separate purposes. For example, if you are using baking soda to absorb odors from your fridge, take it out of the box and leave the pouch exposed without opening the seal.

The powder will absorb the odors, so it can’t be used for cooking purposes. When used for deodorizing purposes, replace the pouches every month.

For cooking and baking. Leave the bag of baking soda in the cardboard box it comes in. If you use some and open the box there are alternative ways of storing it. Place the opened box or pouch in an airtight container or ziplock bag.

Store the bag in a dark, cool place like the back of a cupboard away from sunlight, fumes, or any smells. Keep it away from spaces that contain spices, pungent items like garlic and onion, or any items with a strong scent that can be absorbed.

To ensure freshness, check the powder regularly to see if it has absorbed moisture, or become clumped or soggy.
